The best results come from a photo cropped close to your pet's head, taken in daylight against a plain background.
Here is why. The automatic cut-out is built to find human faces. When it finds none, it cuts out the main subject of the photo instead. Crop close to the head first and the head is what goes on the sock; with a full-length photo, the whole animal may end up on it.
